Chiropractics Really Should Be Actually A Possibility For Herniated Disc Treatment

A herniated disc occurs when the outer protective fibrous ring that encapsulates the central soft portion of an intervertebral disc dries out and tears allowing the inner material to bulge. Herniated disc treatment by themselves do not cause pain. The pain of a herniated disc is caused by pressure put on the spinal cord due to the bulging or is due to resultant inflammation. People that have been diagnosed with a herniated disc know this pain all too well. It can manifest itself as back or leg pain, weakness in the legs, or as a myriad of other abnormalities of the lower extremities. A herniated disc may be the result of an injury or a result of subluxation, which is the condition when a bone or bones in the spine become misaligned, compressing the spinal nerve, and causing pain.

A herniated disc can be treated in a number of ways, the most common being the use of anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling of the affected area and alleviate pain, cortisone shots, physical therapy, and surgery. While these treatments can bring at least temporary relief, often they are not lasting. Because of the severe invasive nature of surgery, it should always be the last resort. Even surgery is not successful one hundred percent of the time and it is a high price to pay if it does not correct the problem. Other less intrusive conservative treatment alternatives should always be exhausted first. This is the wiser and common sense approach.

A complete list of conservative alternatives should also include chiropractics. Chiropractic professionals are trained to pinpoint and isolate the areas of subluxation in the vertebrae. Doctors of chiropractics, perhaps even more than regular doctors, specialize in and understand the role of subluxation in the cause of pain and their treatment.

A chiropractic doctor is highly trained in the techniques of manipulation or the method of using a series of gentle adjustments to the spine over time to correct or significantly reduce a subluxation in the spine. Successful treatment in this manner is not painful but can relieve the pressure on the spinal nerve and ultimately the pain. Continued persistent treatment, in conjunction with stretching and strengthening exercises over time, can bring long term correction of the condition and lasting pain relief. As is the case with many ailments, early diagnosis offers the best chance of successful treatment.

Before making the decision to have surgery, make sure that you have tried all of the more conservative treatment methods first. Don't exclude chiropractics from your list of alternatives.
